Question and Answers

What is a leased dedicated server?
A leased dedicated server, also known as a 'specialised server', is a computer hosted in a data centre that is either physical (bare metal) or virtual and used exclusively by a single tenant.

Dedicated servers can run any operating system, including Linux distributions, Microsoft Windows and macOS. They can also run any other operating system designed for general-purpose computers.

Dedicated servers provide users with secure, pre-configured and private access to the operating system, as well as firewalls that can be configured according to the user's specific needs. To maximise security, it is advisable to use strong passwords and SSH keys, as well as two-factor authentication.
What is the difference between a dedicated server, VPS, and a cloud?
The main difference is that a dedicated server is a physical hardware device, whereas a VPS (virtual private server) and a cloud server are virtualised server instances. VPS stands for 'virtual private server'. Both VPS and cloud servers are virtual server instances (cloud hosting). They are considered software server environments because they are created using virtualisation technology.

Another difference is that with rented servers and 'dedicated hosting' services, the hardware (i.e. the physical server) is provided exclusively to one user.

Another difference is that, with rented servers and 'dedicated hosting' services, the hardware (i.e. the physical server) is provided exclusively to one user.
How are leased dedicated servers different from bare metal servers?
No, there is no difference. The term 'bare metal server' is relatively new. It was created to distinguish 'cloud servers', which are virtual server environments created using virtualisation technology, from 'bare metal servers', where the operating system (OS) is installed directly on the physical server without the use of a hypervisor or virtualisation technology.

The term 'dedicated server' (or 'specialised server') has always referred to a physical server used by a single tenant.

Following the advent of cloud computing, the IT industry began using the term 'cloud server' to refer to a server instance created using virtualisation technology. Cloud servers are, in fact, 'virtual servers' (virtual computing instances that run their own operating system). However, 'cloud server' specifies that the virtual server is hosted on a cluster of servers using virtualisation technology. All hosts operating as a group are part of the cluster. This is where the term 'bare metal server' comes in. A bare metal server is a dedicated server used by a single tenant, who leases physical hardware rather than a virtualised computing environment.
What is the difference between HDD and SSD disk space?
SSD stands for 'solid state drive'. HDD stands for 'hard disk drive'. SSD drives use flash memory to store electronic data. HDD drives use rotating disks with a magnetic coating and a mechanical arm to read and write data. SSD drives are much faster than HDDs at processing data. HDDs are much slower than SSDs in terms of read/write speed. They have a data transfer speed of 30–150 MB/s. In contrast, SSDs can achieve data transfer speeds of between 500 and 3,500 MB/s. SSDs have faster file access than HDDs because they have no moving parts. HDDs typically offer more storage space at a lower price per terabyte (TB) of stored data. Currently, hard drives with a capacity of 30 TB are available, such as the Seagate Exos M and IronWolf Pro models. When SSDs first appeared on the market, they were mainly available with smaller capacities. However, by the end of 2025, the largest SSDs for the mass market and servers will have a capacity of 8 TB.

Value
HDDs are less expensive, especially those with larger capacities, making them much more affordable. SSDs are much more expensive than HDDs on a per-gigabyte basis. However, their prices are constantly decreasing. Storage durability
HDDs are less resistant to physical damage when used in portable devices due to the use of rotating magnetic platters and a mechanical arm for reading and writing data. SSDs designed for servers are much more durable as they have no moving parts, making them a better choice for portable devices.

Although durability is important, it is not the most important factor to consider when using drives for data storage on servers. The most important factor is storage performance.

SSD drives reduce application load times. With SSDs, this is three to four times faster than with HDDs. SSD data transfer speeds range from 500 MB/s to 3,500 MB/s, making them the preferred choice for data storage when fast processing and application delivery are required. For example, SSDs are widely used for hosting operating systems (OS). Thanks to their faster start-up and reading and writing speeds for software applications, lower power consumption and faster overall performance, SSDs are popular for desktop computers and production environments.

HDDs are mainly used for storing static content and archiving data.
What does "Dedicated Server Bulgaria" mean?
A "Dedicated Server Bulgaria" is a physical or virtual server that is located in a data centre in the Republic of Bulgaria.

Most data centres in Bulgaria are in Sofia, the capital city. One of the things they offer is data centre facilities, which are run by Equinix. There are data centre facilities in other Bulgarian cities and towns, including Plovdiv, Varna and Kapitan Andreevo, a small town near the border between Bulgaria and Turkey.

RAX (Rax.bg) is probably the most trusted provider of dedicated servers in Bulgaria. It has been operating in the local and international markets for over 25 years. RAX provides dedicated hosting services from Equinix data centres in Sofia and Plovdiv, as well as from Kapitan Andreevo. It also works with local NOCs and facility owners.

Rax.bg offers two types of Bulgarian dedicated servers: physical (bare metal) and virtual (single tenancy). They can run any Linux operating system (OS) distribution, Microsoft Windows-based OS or MacOS.

By default, RAX dedicated servers in Bulgaria offer secure and private access to the operating system environment and have firewalls that can be configured when needed. The usual ways to keep things safe include strong passwords, SSH keys and two-factor authentication.
Is dedicated server in Bulgaria good for content delivery?
Yes, Bulgaria is between Romania, Greece, Turkey, Serbia and North Macedonia. This makes the country and its data centre networks the best possible place for internet and traffic exchange. Bulgaria doesn't have many internet exchanges. However, it is connected to the main IXs (Internet Exchange Points) in Romania, Serbia and North Macedonia.

The RAX (Rax.bg) network is based in the Equinix Sofia 1 data centre. This makes it one of the best ways to store data and applications. These can be sent straight away to the Bulgarian market. It can also send optimised content to Romania, Greece, Serbia and North Macedonia. It might take longer to connect to Turkey because the main Turkish internet service providers (ISPs) do not take part in internet exchanges or open peering.

Rax.bg also offers colocation hosting and leased dedicated servers in data centres in Bucharest, Romania, Thessaloniki and Athens in Greece through its partner NOC. This makes RAX one of the best networks for storing data and providing fast application services in Southeast Europe.
